Let me just say that while ordering this book I had no clue who the author is or what her writing is like. I honestly just bought it because the cover caught my eye (seriously, LOOK HOW PRETTY THE FREAKING COVER IS) and I am so glad that I did. This book wrecked me and made my heart ache in ways I didn’t even knew were possible. From the very first poem when she starts off by saying “Last night I thought I kissed the loneliness from out your belly button.” I knew I was in for a treat.Page after page Donna-Marie Riley delivers words that make you grateful that you were alive long enough to experience them. This book evokes all sorts of emotions that may or may not have laid dormant for a while.
Recommended for anyone who’s looking for a short read that will gut your soul.

Love and Other Small Wars DonnaMarie Riley 9780615931111 Books Reviews
First of all, WHAT A BABE. Secondly, get this GET IT NOW.
reading material on the passenger seat of a stalled time machine. what I mean is this book's presence allows no transport. in it, the poems 'Consequences' and 'History' will put you on your back. a very real fist, sure, but oh, those cartoon stars.
A staggeringly beautiful collection of words. Never have I encountered a collection of poetry that so moved me, that touched the deepest parts of my soul. I strongly recommend having a box of tissues nearby when reading. I know I sure needed them. I would recommend to anyone.
Speechless. Breathless. This set of poems/prose pieces has my mouth salivating for more. I have never been more inspired, more touched, and more in love with words before. I recommend this book to every single person who admires and enjoys poetry. Not only was this beautiful, but the way the book was published is also beautiful. Almost as if you went into a bookstore, picked it off of the shelf, and bought it for yourself. Everything about this is complete perfection, and I recommend this to everyone and anyone. Truly. I do.
There is love. There are its expressions. There are ways in which one chooses to talk about it. And then there is poetry, which seems to be the solution to every pain, heartbreak and every possible wound that is unseen or unheard.
I do not read much of poetry. Somehow, I don’t get the genre, but when something does get my attention, then that poet is booked for life for me. “Love and Other Small Wars” by Donna-Marie Riley is one such book of poems that I am hooked to. I have reread it thrice already and I know that I will go on for more, because it is that heartbreakingly beautiful and honest.
I was told by a dear friend about her and I could not help but check out her Tumblr page and also the wonderful verse and prose which she writes. Donna-Marie’s writing is a breeze, a welcome change from everything that I have read when it comes to verse.
She makes the simple extraordinary. The emotion, the pain and the expectations from life and what others expect from us, bleeds through these pages and that is what makes it beautiful. Riley’s poems are from the heart, they are from the gut, they are from every pore of her body – she does not mince words, she will not sugar-coat it for you and you will thank her for it.
From “How to Be Alone A Twelve-Step Program” which is my favourite poem to “Consequences” – a poem about her gay brother and his boyfriend (who I could relate to more than anything else) to, “A Poem for the Insomniacs” and every other poem, Riley draws a picture so real and struggling with different emotions and life, that it feels like chewing on glass. It feels that wounded and real and somewhere down the line, you enjoy the treat so much, that you want to keep coming back to it – again and again and again.
Here is something for you from my favourite poem in the book
“Learn to love yourself
like it is the hardest math equation
you have ever been asked to solve.”
Amazing author. If you're looking for something to read, this is a good one.
Riley's book struck me in a way I'd never expected it to. There was a range of emotions I wasn't ready to deal with, and she found them, pulled them out, threw them around, and folded them up nicely.
The manner in which she explores the angst and hope and stress of living each and every day is breathtaking. Her images are crisp and creative, her subjects raw and truthful, her voice strong and sure of itself. It was emotional turmoil in the most beautiful way. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Follow her mind, follow her heart it's there in the pages.
